What will actually happen if you do not exercise your right to choose an electricity supplier after 1 October, 2020?
Posted on: 20 Oct, 2020

Following the amendments to the Energy Act, by 1 October 2020 all small, medium or large business owners must choose their electricity provider, as from this date on, the regulated market for business customers will cease to exist and electricity supply at prices determined by the EWRC will be terminated.

The official deadline for the change over to a free market is October 1, 2020.

Technically, this means that applications for a change of provider must be submitted by 10 September 2020. Therefore, this is the deadline for concluding a contract in order to comply with the legal deadline.

In case you do not conclude a contract that is favourable for you with an electricity provider of your choice within the announced period, your electricity will not be cut off, nor will you have any power outages.

However, if you do not exercise your right to choose, then from 1 October, 2020, prices and conditions for electricity supply will come into force for you ex oficio. You will receive a standard contract from your current provider for the period from 1 October, 2020 to 20 June, 2021. These standard general contracts (i.e., not customised for you and your specific needs) will define the rights and obligations of the parties, conditions for the supply of electricity and termination of the contract, as well as a new price for the supply of electricity.

Specific prices have not been announced so far. Their announcement is expected at the end of August, and this will deprive consumers of enough time to avoid unfavourable conditions and prices. For many businesses, this will result in higher electricity costs, which is why we advise every business owner in Bulgaria to exercise due caution when choosing a provider and thus attain the most favourable conditions for themselves and their business.

You can find more information on what steps to take when choosing a provider and what to look out for during your selection in our article “Steps to choosing a provider of electricity on the free market” in the Useful Information section of www.synergonenergy.bg
